The Front Porch Bake Shop, LLC is NEPA’s only open-air bake shop. Created by Susan Thackara in the fall of 2020, The Front Porch Bake Shop offers delicious and sweet treats for all ages, with options for those that have dietary restrictions typically available.
Susan is a full-time high school teacher and mother of two young children. She and her husband Dave work together baking cupcakes, cookies, scones, and more to sell off of their front porch. The shop is open Saturday mornings, with expanded hours on and around holidays.
Opening up a craft bake shop had been Susan’s dream for many years, initially imagining it would happen once she retired from teaching. With a global pandemic raging and a little more time to experiment and bake in quarantine, Susan went into full Carpe Diem mode and The Front Porch Bake Shop was created.
Susan learned her love of baking from her grandmother, eventually taking cake decorating classes as a teenager. Spending time in the kitchen is something that Dave and Susan did often in the beginning of their marriage, with Susan patiently teaching Dave some baking fundamentals. But with 2 children under the age of 6, recreational baking fell to the back burner for a while. The Front Porch Bake Shop features weekly and seasonal cupcake flavors, and encourages pre-ordering as popular flavors have a tendency to sell out. Each week, you will find Dave’s Signature Double Chocolate Chip Sea Salt Cookies and his scone of the month. Susan focuses on the creation of cupcakes, cakes, brownies and weekly specials. Each week, the shop tries to feature a gluten free option.
The Front Porch Bake Shop has created amazing custom orders, with larger and more specialized items needing 2-3 weeks of advanced planning. (Again, 2 bakers, 2 other full time jobs, 2 small children). The shop also features special holiday menus which are posted to Facebook and Instagram. The shop is licensed and insured and follows all Covid-19 protocols. Despite the name, customers are often surprised that the shop is actually located on a front porch, but have shown incredible support throughout its early stages and despite all Covid-related challenges.
