Every Sunday, we turn the spotlight on some great creatives. This week, we have Alex Manganella!

By day, Alex is a Production Manager on the video team at Coal Creative. Outside of work, he works on short films, documentaries and sketches with friends and family.

Alex has always been a writer in some capacity, but in high school he began taking an interest in writing for film and TV. His love for comedies like “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” inspired him to write spec scripts and comedy sketches. However, he didn’t start to film anything until college started. Fun fact, he landed his job at Coal because the Creative Director noticed some of his sketches and reached out to collaborate.

Alex’s ideas can come from anywhere. Life experiences are always reliable for comedy sketches and a long drive with good music helps to create something dramatic. One thing always stays true: Alex typically creates a soundtrack before moving into the writing process. This creates a productive atmosphere. And, if he’s ever stuck, he usually has some buddies to bounce ideas off of.

When in need of inspiration, Alex usually turns to his family. “Going to a family event is better than any comedy showcase I’ve ever been to,” says Alex.

For him, being creative is always about storytelling, regardless of the form you’re working with. Alex enjoys that you can reclaim any event in your life no matter how tragic or embarrassing, as long as you know how to tell its story. Storytelling is how he believes we find out what’s meaningful to us, and it’s one of the most important ways we can connect with one another.
