Every Sunday, NEPA Creative turns the spotlight on some awesome creatives. This week, we have Sam Kuchwara!
Born and raised in Scranton, Sam has always liked to draw and paint, but only got to do it here and there in grade school and high school. His only consistent high school art class was during senior year, and as soon as he took it, he knew he just wanted to do more. After taking an intro drawing class freshman year at Boston College, he decided to take another intro (painting), and from there onward knew in one way or another he wanted to pursue the arts.
At Boston College, Sam realized how much so many places at home meant to him, and painting those places became a way to reflect on them and commemorate them, so naturally he gravitated to landscape painting. Additionally, Sam became interested in incorporating found objects and materials into his pieces, not only to reuse what might go to waste, but to add texture, color and character to pieces he already had in mind.
Having moved back to Scranton in 2015, Sam still largely works in landscape format and incorporates these found materials, but has also expanded into mural work and regularly shows his art at First Fridays and other marketplace events in Scranton.
