Every Sunday, we turn the spotlight on some great creatives. This week, we have Gabriella Gentile.
Gabby Gentile is a visual artist from Scranton, PA. She received her BA from Keystone College in the spring of 2020. While she primarily focuses on ceramics and sculpture, Gabby also has experience in printmaking and fiber arts. Her artistic interests range from representational sculptures to functional pottery and textiles.
Gabby took an interest in art early in high school, and realized she wanted to pursue art further after taking a film photography class in her senior year. While at Keystone, she was given the opportunity to experience and experiment with a variety of techniques and media. While her intentions were to focus on graphic design, she knew she was meant to change directions once she began working three-dimensionally.
Gabby creates sculptures, prints and functional wares in her own style that include elements of nature, occult symbolism and femininity. She uses environmental, political and social events to influence the themes of her work.
Since she works with a variety of processes and materials, Gabby will think about the symbolism behind the image to choose which medium will be best suited for the finished piece. Clay is perfect for her pieces relating to nature and the Earth. She often uses her chosen medium for a piece to exaggerate and highlight its attributes.
Gabby takes inspiration from her experiences, her spirituality and the world around her. Much of her work deals with current events and her perspective on these issues.
Art is a way for Gabby to honor the beautiful and the ugly experiences of life. It is a way to portray how she sees and experiences the world.
