Every Sunday, NEPA Creative turns the spotlight on some awesome creatives. This week, we have Beckie Henderson!
Ever since she could hold a pencil, Beckie has always loved to draw. Her grandfather was a watercolor artist and her father is extremely creative. As a child in England, Beckie won local art shows and a nationwide Saturday morning TV show contest with a submission of Disney characters at the beach. As a teenager, she drew a lot of anime and comic book stuff and eventually did two years at an art college.
In her early 20’s, Beckie slipped on ice and broke her arm. Because of the pain and the nerve damage, she didn’t draw for years — even holding a pencil was painful. Then she started helping out at Comics On The Green in Scranton and would doodle on the board when writing the weekly comics. That turned into drawing a joke on a package for a famous comic artist, then doodling jokes and what Beckie calls “terrible package pics” on a few of the customers’ orders.
A few years ago, Dave, the owner of Comics on the Green, found some large paper a comic artist had dropped off and asked Beckie if she wanted to draw something as a print for Free Comic Book Day. Beckie drew four characters and the prints sold out before the day ended. Customers started asking for commissions and now Beckie makes prints for conventions and events and takes commission orders for pop culture characters!
