Every Sunday, NEPA Creative turns the spotlight on some awesome creatives. This week, we have Kathleen Beckwith and Amy Burgerhoff of The Perfected Pineapple!
Kathleen and Amy are sisters and co-owners of The Perfected Pineapple, located at 1808 N. Main Avenue in Scranton, PA.
They officially opened their business about 3 years ago, but had really started a couple years before that. About 5 years ago, Kathleen’s daughter had started a secondhand store outside of Philly. Amy and Kathleen began looking at flea markets and estate sales to help her build inventory. That led to discovering discarded items on trash days. As expected, most of these items needed some work. So, they started to fix these items and would often find a new use for them. As they continued to find items, their inventory grew and their storage space shrunk. Amy and Kathleen would bring their updated items to Katheen’s daughter, once a month, but it just came to be too much. So…. they decided to open up their own shop!
Amy and Kathleen have built their business on “curbside finds.” They are trying to keep these items out of the landfills by breathing new life into each piece. Their passion is repurposing the items, which means redesigning them to serve a different purpose. However, they understand that everything does not need to be repurposed. Sometimes a piece can be updated with a fresh coat of paint or a simple fix.
Kathleen is a full-time teacher and Amy is a retired Army veteran and both are fortunate enough to be able to follow their creative dream.
