Every Sunday, we turn the spotlight on some great creatives. This week, we have Mia Walker (she/her)!

Mia is a student at Wilkes University studying Digital Design and Media Art. Her degree is focused in Computer Science and Game and Emergent Technologies. Mia hopes to start her career as a virtual experience designer, and eventually plans to open her own design firm in the future.

Mia started creating from a very young age. She always participated in art clubs and enjoyed artistic activities. She stopped creating for a time in middle school due to bullying, but eventually continued after participating in therapy and an external art class. In high school, she decided that she wanted to go into the game design field. Today, she uses both her art and technical skills to create unique experiences, graphics, and pieces of art.

Mia considers herself a versatile artist, designer, and developer. She creates products and pieces for people based on an idea that they have, or based on a problem that needs to be solved in a creative or interactive way. Her art style focuses on surrealism, while her games strive to break social stigmas, focus on ideas that have not been explored before, and provide a fun, memorable experience to players.

Starting her creative process, Mia plans a lot. She sketches, creates mood boards, references example images, has concept conversations, and more. Then, she chooses the materials that the piece will be created with, and designs the piece based off of her planning phase.

The world itself creatively inspires Mia in multiple ways. Everything from nature to other people’s creations fuels her artistic inspiration.

To Mia, being creative means that you can express yourself through a variety of mediums that suit you best. Whether it’s traditional painting, singing, creating flower arrangements or architecture, anything has the potential to be a creative outlet.
